Before the age of Paul Robinson, David James and Rob Green, goalkeeper jerseys were awesome and England were doing pretty well between the sticks. There was Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton then David Seamen: and the latter is responsible for Tim Flowers making this list.

Becoming one the league's finest goalkeepers at Southampton, he really hit his stride after signing for Blackburn in 1994. The £2.4m fee was a British record for a goalkeeper at the time and it quickly paid off. He was magnificent in a debut season that saw Flowers and Blackburn just miss out on the title. The next season they went one better.

After that the team unraveled: key players left, the manager quit and football moved on. And for some reason Flowers is never mentioned as a top goalkeeper of the era.
