10 Most Shocking Red Cards In Premier League History

1. Eric Cantona - January 25, 1995

If ever football fans hear the song 'Kung Fu Fighting' by Carl Douglas on the jukebox, Eric Cantona's moment of madness at Selhurst Park 21 years ago must come flooding back to them. The Frenchman had received his marching orders for kicking out at Richard Shaw in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, but it was what happened next that will stick in our minds forever. As often happens at football stadiums, supporters revel in the failings of a rival team and this day was no different. Eagles fan Matthew Simmons was determined to goad the superstar following his petulant behaviour, but little did he know he would be on the end of a Cantona kicking. The forward, who was being ushered towards the tunnel by United's kitman, took offence to what Simmons had said and launched himself into the crowd feet first. After stewards managed to wrestle Cantona away from the fan with his fists flailing, it was clear that a substantial punishment was about to be dished out. United's number seven was deservedly punished severely with a nine-month ban by the FA and an order to participate in 120 hours of community service. Manchester United lost out on the title that year, but who knows what might have happened if Cantona hadn't have let the fan's provocation get the better of him.
