10 Most Shocking World Cup Moments Ever

1. A Fatal Own Goal

Many fans of football will tell you that, for them, it’s more than just a game, but one truly disturbed Colombian fan clearly took the sport far too seriously after deciding to brutally murder a player for scoring an own goal that sent the nation out of the 1994 World Cup.

Andres Escobar, nicknamed The Gentleman and well-known for being a good sport both on and off the pitch, mistimed a challenge and sliced the ball into his own net during a group stage game against the United States, who also hosted the tournament. The match ended in a 2-1 victory for the US and Colombia finished bottom of their group.

Escobar flew home with the squad and was enjoying a night on the town a few days later when he was shot six times, allegedly as an act of revenge for his mistake on the pitch. He died less than an hour later and a bodyguard linked with Colombian drug cartels owned up to the crime and was sent to jail for 43 years, but was released after just 11 due to good behaviour.
