10 Most Under-Rated Newcastle Players Ever

8. Liam O'Brien

Newcastle United: 1988-94 League Appearances: 151 League Goals: 19
Another player remembered for his goal during a Tyne-Wear derby in 1992, this time at Roker Park - and the 16-cap Republic of Ireland international was even immortalised in verse for that. At six-foot tall, Liam O'Brien was a sizeable midfielder who would dominate the middle of the park - and who made 31 league appearances for Manchester United, something you don't do unless you're a reasonable performer. Originally relegated with Newcastle in 1989, O'Brien was influential in Kevin Keegan's promotion-winning season of 1992-93 - playing 33 times and scoring on six occasions. Keegan has always maintained that O'Brien was crucial to his plans that season and that he played a big role in winning Newcastle promotion. O'Brien should be remembered for his other footballing exploits - as well as the goal against Sunderland, of course - when Magpies supporters speak of him.
