10 Newcastle Players Who Could Be Revitalised By Steve McClaren
3. Sylvain Marveaux
Syvlain Marveaux was sent on a season-long loan to Guingamp last summer after Alan Pardew made it clear the playmaker was not in his plans - a view that was then adopted by John Carver. Despite this, Marveaux had a reasonable campaign in France, contributing two goals and three assists during 2014-15. Although not exactly prolific, Marveaux received praise from a number of Ligue 1 commentators for his impressive performances. Creativity was severely lacking on Tyneside during the 2014-15 campaign - but it wasn't at Guingamp. This turned out to be another pointless loan deal from a Newcastle point of view, depriving the Magpies of an option in attack. Similar to the Cabella situation, Marveaux needs a coaching staff around him who will allow him to play the game to his strengths and use his own technical gifts to pick a pass and create a chance for his teammates. What's more, McClaren and Ian Cathro will hopefully deploy Marveaux in his natural position as a central playmaker, rather than as a winger, so he has a real opportunity to prove his worth. Marveaux's lives on Tyneside are running out, but he finally has a head coach at the helm who could feasibly get the best out of him.
