It's hardly surprising that Daniel Sturridge missed out on the England squad. The Liverpool forward has had a shocker of a season, with an ill-advised loan move to West Brom only confounding his misery after suffering a hamstring injury in February.

He only scored two league goals all season, and won't be looking back on 2017-18 as a particularly memorable year. With the likes of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy scoring many more goals and having far better seasons, there can be no doubt that Sturridge simply can't be classed among England's first choice forwards anymore.

However, the fact that Danny Welbeck still got in the squad, despite not having a particularly great season either, could frustrate Sturridge, who has proven himself a reliable performer at past tournaments, scoring in both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016. He also scored a couple of good goals during England's World Cup qualification run and might have hoped that his past successes and individual skill would be enough to buy him a ticket to Russia.
