10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Liverpool
4. Andy Carroll
In fairness to Carroll, as soon as Kenny Dalglish smashed Liverpool's transfer record by bringing him to Anfield in January 2011, he was on a hiding to nothing. The big striker was not worth close to the £35m that the club paid for him, and unsurprisingly he failed to deliver. It's incredible to think that Luis Suarez was over £10m cheaper. Carroll cannot be devoid of criticism, however, and his performance simply weren't good enough for a player more talented than some give him credit for. He didn't make his debut until nearly two months after signing, with injuries curtailing his progress. It was to become a far too regular occurrence. A match-winning performance against Manchester City a month later, in which he scored two fine efforts, ought to have been the catalyst in getting his Liverpool career off the ground, but he never kicked on. He scored just four times in 35 Premier League appearances in 2011/12, with his lack of movement, heavy touch and injury problems making him more of a hindrance than anything. His FA Cup semi-final winning goal against Everton at Wembley did at least endear himself to Reds fans everywhere, but although he was always a fairly popular player, it was impossible to ignore just how ineffective he was. When Rodgers arrived in 2012 it was clear Carroll had no future at Anfield. His robust style was completely against the Northern Irishman's footballing philosophy, and having spent a year on loan at West Ham in 2012/3, he joined them for £15m last summer.
