10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Man Utd
8. Juan Sebastian Veron
When he signed for United at 26, Juan Veron came in as the most expensive player in British football history. He had great spells in Serie A with Parma and Lazio especially and it was hoped that the Argentinian could come into the team to add a new dimension to United's midfield. But Veron never really got going in red. His better performances tended to come in Europe as Alex Ferguson chased his second Champions League crown, but being shoehorned in to a system that didn't suit him, Veron failed to prosper. His moments of genius were too few and far between as the weight of all the £28.1 million fee fell on his shoulders. He arrived in the same summer as Ruud van Nistelrooy, and their paths couldn't have taken directions more different to the other. Van Nistelrooy flourished as one of United's best out-and-out goalscorers, but Veron was bought as a square peg that fit into a round hole. It wasn't the most sensible way to spend money, but United seem to be repeating their transfer market mistakes even today.
