Jon Dahl Tomasson managed to claim six major trophies throughout his career - including the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, as well as the Serie A, Eredivisie and Bundesliga titles - yet the Dane was discarded after just a solitary season on Tyneside. True all of those trophies arrived during his post-NUFC career, but Tomasson's talent was undoubtedly wasted at Newcastle. After arriving from Heerenveen in the summer of 1997, Tomasson made 35 appearances for the Magpies but netted just four times. A serious injury to Alan Shearer stunted the Dane's progress, as he was asked to play regularly as a striker rather than in his favoured position as an attacking-midfielder or No 10. Newcastle tumbling from being title contenders to mid-table also-rans did not help Tomasson's cause either, and he was allowed to leave for Feyenoord in 1998 where, after being restored to an attacking-midfield berth, he claimed the Eredivisie during his first season. Tomasson also went on to play for AC Milan, VfB Stuttgart and Villarreal, finishing with a career club record of 180 strikes in 450 league games. With 52 goals from a staggering 112 Denmark caps too, Tomasson's class was undoubted - and Newcastle missed out on his best years by discarding him too quickly.
