It always seemed to be a strange decision to part ways with fan favourite Nolberto Solano in January 2004, especially for a fee as little as £1.5 million. The Peruvian trumpet-player would later cite a strained relationship as the reason for his departure, with the majority of the St. James Park faithful dismayed at the popular wingers exit. They neednt have worried too much, however, as 18 months later, he would return. After performing admirably for Aston Villa, Graeme Souness delved back into the transfer market to entice the Peruvian back to St. James Park - possibly a cheap ploy to get a disgruntled support on his side. It shows the connection shared between the former Boca Juniors midfielder and the club that he snubbed the European champions to join a side who had just finished four places above the relegation places. With Liverpool having missed out on Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa, they subsequently turned their attentions to the 30 year old wide-man, and it looked like he would he link up with the side who had just been crowned kings of Europe in Istanbul. However, upon hearing the Toon Army support chant his name at the unveiling of Michael Owen at St. James Park, his mind was made up. Nobby Solano was coming home.
