10 Players Who Probably Regret Joining Spurs

3. Heurelho Gomes

Brazilian goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was first noticed by PSV scouts, who picked him up from Cruzeiro in 2004, and despite a number of initial critics, Gomes quickly eradicated the doubters on his way to becoming a crowd favourite. His reliability was the solid backbone behind four consecutive Eredivisie titles. Gomes' form for PSV attracted Tottenham manager Juande Ramos, who signed the shot stopper for around £7.8 million in 2008, but unfortunately for Spurs it was a rocky start, as Gomes contributed to a number of blunders and with the club deep in the relegation zone, goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert was sacked. However his improved form in the 2009-10 season helped spur Tottenham onto Champions League qualification ahead of Manchester City, although, this single campaign proved to be the highlight of his otherwise inconsistent career at White Hart Lane. A string of high-profile errors led to the signing of Brad Friedel in 2011 along with Gomes' relegation to the bench, and with an injury riddled loan spell at Hoffenheim, coupled with the signing of French keeper Hugo Lloris, time had finally been called on Gomes' hugely underwhelming time with Tottenham. However, Watford showed him some pity and signed him to a one-year-deal, which is a far cry from glorious nights in the Champions League.
