The signing of Didi Hamann from Bayern Munich was an astonishing coup considering how immense the German was in a distinctly mediocre Newcastle side. He was the rare diamond in the rough of Kenny Dalglish's final days and Ruud Gullit's first ones. Sadly for Newcastle, Hamann rightly recognised that he was suited to bigger and better things than playing the worst definition of "sexy football" ever conceived, and decided he'd refuse to play to force through a move to Liverpool. Unfortunately that meant a player who could have been a legend will forever be remembered as the agitant who used his personal dislike of Gullit to force a move to Liverpool and more impressive wages. It doesn't change the fact that he was right though.
