10 Players You Totally Forgot Played For Southampton

5. Justin Fashanu

Once a promising future star who was the first black British player to transfer for £1 million when he moved from Norwich to Nottingham Forest, Fashanu became much better known as the first professional footballer to come out as gay and for his tragic suicide that followed. What he is not so well known for is the nine games that he played for Southampton back in 1982. Things hadn't worked out for Fashanu at Forest. He had not scored with the same frequency as he had at Norwich and his homosexuality, not then public knowledge, caused clashes with the old fashioned attitudes of outspoken boss Brian Clough. As a result the England Under-21 international was made available for transfer after barely a season at the City Ground. Fashanu was loaned to ambitious Saints in August 1982 and was seen as a potential long term replacement for the departing Kevin Keegan. He scored three times in his brief spell at The Dell and manager Lawrie McMenemy was keen to make the move permanent, but was prevented from doing so for lack of funds. Fashanu instead joined Forest's rivals Notts County.
