The midfielder made his professional debut at the age of 16 when he came on as a first half substitute for Plymouth against Hull City. He was quickly tipped for big things by then manager Ian Holloway and despite having a trial at Chelsea, the youngster secured a move to Everton in 2008 and his performances continued to win rave reviews. Despite claiming he didn't want to play for any other club, an injured Gosling couldn't agree new terms with the Toffees and moved to the Magpies on a Bosman. Injuries continued to plague his Magpies career and the once 'next-best-thing' found himself struggling for form and fitness, much to the frustration of everyone at the club. Finding himself playing second fiddle to the centre-midfield partnership of Tiote and Cabaye seemed to stall any potential progression, but it was after the Frenchman's sale when Gosling started to feel disillusioned on Tyneside. Not feeling he was getting a fair run in the team, Gosling was shipped out on loan to lower-league Blackpool and returned to the club in 2014 to see out the remainder of his contract. Surprisingly, his final few months saw him put together a decent run of games, but he knew deep down that his future lay elsewhere. Currently a regular fixture in Eddie Lowe's Bournemouth side, Gosling may look back at Newcastle as being a mistake, but at least he found love on Tyneside, even if it wasn't on the football pitch.
