The winger was a man in demand when he decided to end his five-year stint with Rennes. Involved in a very public battle for his signature, the Magpies beat Liverpool in the race to sign the left-sided midfielder in the summer of 2011 and Marveaux was expected to slot straight into Newcastle's starting XI to provide an injection of pace that would terrify the Premier League's defences. However, despite rubbishing claims that a move to Kenny Dalglish's men only broke down because of a failed medical, the Frenchman has spent a huge chunk of his five years on Tyneside on the treatment table and looks likely to be released when his contract runs out in the summer. When fit, Marveaux has struggled to make a breakthrough into any of the Magpies' recent managers' starting line-up and his found himself frustratingly plying his trade in the second string. Whether he would have had more success had he chosen to shun the North East club, no-one will ever know, but the 29 year old seems likely to see out the latter stages of his career back in France having been a major disappointment in England.
