10 Players Who Should Regret Turning Down Arsenal

8. Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen turned down the opportunity to join Arsenal, instead opting to sign for north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and not exactly endearing himself to Gunners fans in the process. Arsene Wenger expressed an interest in the Belgium international's services but, after asking him to play in midfield, he chose White Hart Lane over the Emirates. "(Arsenal's interest) was concrete, but they wanted me to be a controller in the midfield, an Emmanuel Petit-type," he told NUsport. "I'm not afraid of competition, but the overall picture of Spurs appealed to me more." Jan Vertonghen has since established himself as an essential member of Tottenham's squad, although he has found himself playing in a host of positions other than centre back, which he surely can't be too happy about. Throw into the mix that he hasn't been competing for trophies, the lack of Champions League football and the poor form of Tottenham last year, and you have to suspect that Vertonghen could have achieved so much more on the red side of London.
