10 Problems Only Newcastle United Fans Will Understand
4. The Erratic Form
Newcastle has always been a team capable of great achievements, however their inability to maintain a good run of form they have often fallen at the last hurdle. In the 1995/96 season Newcastle were flying high at the start of the season and by Christmas they were top of the table and 12 points clear of second place Manchester United. But after a string of unfortunate results, Newcastle's run of good form became stagnant and had to settle for second place. This was the year Kevin Keegan gave his famous interview where he was recorded shouting "I would love it if we beat them. Love it!". The 1996/97 season also saw Newcastle finish as runners up once again to Alex Ferguson's Manchester United team who became champions with 75 points, the lowest amount of points ever recorded by a Premier League winner. Newcastle actually scored more points in the 1995/96 season than the champions in the 1996/97 season. After the departure of Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish was able to guide the club to the final of the F.A Cup in 1997 with the team falling short against Arsenal losing 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. Newcastle only had to wait 12 months for another stab at silverware as they got to the F.A Cup final once again against Machester United, this time under new manager Ruud Gullit's guidance. Newcastle ended up losing the game 2-0 and haven't reached a final since.
