10 Shocking Spurs Departures That Nobody Expected

1. Gary Lineker

England's second-highest goalscorer of all time, Gary Lineker, signed for Spurs in 1989 for £2 million after a successful spell in Spain with Barcelona. Over three seasons at White Hart Lane, he scored 67 goals in 105 league games and won the FA Cup while playing for the club. In his final season with the club - the final season before the old First Division became the Premier League in the 1992-93 campaign - he was the top flight's second-highest goalscorer with 28 goals from 35 games. With Lineker still capable of performing at the highest level and with the chance of playing in the inaugural season of the Premier League, he left the club to sign for Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan - an unprecedented move for a top class player at the time. Neglecting the opportunity to play in the newly formed Premier League and moving to such a small club (comparatively, at least) was quite the shocking move and Lineker would spend the next couple of seasons plagued by injury before retiring. So there you have it - ten shocking Spurs departures that nobody expected. Did you enjoy this article? Were you shocked by the departures of the men on this list?
