Time At Spurs: 1994-1995. Positions: Sweeper, Centre Back, Defensive Midfielder, Midfielder. Romanian international Gheorghe Popescu was a big signing for Spurs back in the mid-1990s and, although he didn't stay very long, he was clearly a top talent. He could provide a strong core to a team by playing anywhere in the middle of his own half. He could clean up behind the defence, play in the defence itself, protect the defence as a defensive midfielder or actually play right in the middle. The fact that he left Spurs so soon was quite disappointing and the fact that it was Barcelona who signed him shows how highly thought of he was.
