10 Strangest Ever Everton Signings

1. Jimmy Payne

Jimmy Payne€™s move to Everton raised eyebrows and tuned heads for the same reason as Beardsley€™s, except it was even more of a headline-stealer in its day. In April 1956, the skilful right-winger became the first player to jump ship from Liverpool to Everton for more than 30 years. He was known for bringing flare to the flank at Anfield, but his career on the other side of Stanley Park was cut short by injuries. A boyhood Evertonian, Payne knew the meaning of the word when his stay at the club he supported as a child came to an abrupt end after just six games when injuries forced him into early retirement. In those days, pro footballers didn€™t walk away from the game with cash piles big enough to support them into old age, so Payne went on to become a newsagent.
