10 Things Man Utd Need To Learn From City & Liverpool

4. Money Doesn't Always Buy Success

Manchester United have already spent triple what they did last summer during the current transfer window with a combined £60 million being lavished on Luke Shaw of Southampton and Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera, dwarfing the £27 million outlay on Marouane Fellaini 12 months ago. And they've been tipped to spend yet more money this summer as they look to rebuild following David Moyes's damaging season in charge, with some reports suggesting successor Louis van Gaal has a £200 million budget of which to buy in new players. Already in this calendar year United have spent £97 million, taking into account the January purchase of Juan Mata for £37.1 million. And if van Gaal is going to splash any more cash he may be wise to look at Manchester City to learn that profligacy does not always give you a 100% chance of success. City have made similar big-money purchases in the past, such as that of Robinho (above) for £32.5 million and that didn't work out at all. If United fans were hoping they could buy their way back into Premier League contention, they may have to think again because the Premier League era has been scattered with expensive flops since its inception in 1992 - something the Red Devils know only too well - Juan Sebastian Veron, anybody?
