5. The Start Of The End Of An England Career

There was no doubt that Gascoigne was one of if not the star of Euro 1996 for England. He was one of the players certainly in the frame to be called up for Glenn Hoddle€™s World Cup Squad for France 98€™. To his shock, Gazza wasn€™t included. The England star described Hoddle's decision as "the biggest shock I'd ever had." Back in Britain, Gazza's dad John received the news when his son telephoned him from the England training camp in La Manga, Spain. He told him: "Cancel your holiday to France." Hoddle defended the controversial decision to drop Gazza by saying the star has too many mental and physical problems which weren€™t healed with Gazza pictured on nights out and eating kebabs. This set back was certainly the first sign of Gazza€™s England career coming to a conclusion.
