Rodwell links nicely to the fact that Yann M'Vila and Lee Cattermole should be the base that Sunderland build everything around. They're the two most influential players in the side, and provide genuine backbone to an otherwise lacklustre team. M'Vila in particular is sheer quality, and could play for almost any team in the league, while Cattermole provides a sharp edge. But in a three-man central midfield, it's crucial that you have...three central midfielders. M'Vila and Cattermole are great, but they need a third musketeer if they don't want to see all of their hard work undone. Jordi Gomez has filled in at times but he's too casual for the role, Jack Rodwell has tried and failed, and now we're using players out of position there. The only choice should be Seb Larsson who has been criminally frozen out following his Player of the Season campaign last year. He must be given a chance, and if he does start regularly, I can only see results improving.
