10 Ultimate Cult Heroes Of Newcastle United In The Premier League Era

8. Antoine Sibierski

Played for NUFC: 2006 - 2007

Appearances: 39, Goals: 8

Perhaps only Demba Ba can attest to being Newcastle's greatest free transfer signing but Sibierski pushes our former Syrup Loving Goal Machine right to the wire.

Disgruntled Toon fans were initially outraged that the Club were scraping around the bargain bin for new recruits on Deadline Day with Sibierski, formerly of Manchester City, penning a one-year deal at St James' Park just over two hours before the window snapped shut. Hardly the most inspiring capture.

But the French striker quickly became a fans favourite - earning the nickname 'Super Sib' - after scoring on his debut in the against Levadia Tallin in the UEFA Cup and would continue to prove a vital source of goals in Europe. He also established a successful partnership with Obafemi Martins and would end his solitary season in black and white with eight goals to his name, including the winners against Levadia, Fenerbache and Portsmouth.

Regrettably the club didn't recognise Sibierski's contributions as being worth the two-year contract he desired and he left to join Wigan in 2007.
