10 Underwhelming Spurs Signings Who Became Cult Heroes

6. Didier Zokora

''Didier was regarded as one of the best midfield players going into the World Cup and he proved that in the group stage. A lot of clubs were after him, we had to compete for his services and he is a very good signing.'' - Martin Jol, June 2006.
It's not like Zokora was an unknown when he signed for Spurs in 2006, having impressed for the Ivory Coast in the World Cup, but for the hefty price tag of £8.2 million, Spurs supporters were sceptical of signing the robust Saint Etienne midfielder. The White Hart Lane faithful needn't have worried, however, as Zokora proved to be a quality and steely addition to the Spurs midfield. Adding panache, guile and heart, Zokora was an all-action defensive midfielder who left nothing in the dressing room. During his three years with the club, he featured 134 times and appeared in two League Cup finals - winning one. However, he did fail to score for the club but that was never his game - his primary duty was digging in and preventing the opposition from playing. Zokora was certainly a fan's favourite at the club and lived up to the price tag which had initially worried the White Hart Lane faithful. An integral part of the north London outfit, Spurs supporters were certainly sorry to see the back of him when he left for Sevilla in the summer of 2009, although the Ivorian left with their best wishes.
