10 Most Undeserving Players Who Appeared 50 Times For Newcastle

9. Jean-Alain Boumsong - 59 Appearances

It's no wonder really that the powers that be saw something suspicious in Boumsong's move from Rangers to Newcastle: not only had he signed for a massive fee having been available to Rangers for nothing the summer previously (becoming the latest player bought from the club by Graeme Souness for a suspiciously inflated price) he also appeared to be without any of the skills required of a Premier League footballer. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, Boumsong proved himself to be inferior even to Titus Bramble, which is impressive going, and his reading of the game and inability to deal with pacy or powerful strikers made every accusation aimed at Newcastle's shaky back-line was entirely well-placed. In truth, he should have played no more than half a season's worth of games, but the £8m fee meant Newcastle were unlikely to cut their losses without a fight, which meant that the future Juventus player managed to creep above the 50 game mark. Somehow, after leaving Newcastle he proved to be a reasonable player.
