10 Most Undeserving Players Who Appeared 50 Times For Newcastle

8. Stephen Carr - 107 Appearances

First thing's first, Steve Carr is some way away from being the worst player Newcastle have signed - he's not even the worst right-back who has played for the club in the Premier League, thanks to some incredibly odd decisions (like signing Lamine Diatta) - but he was the epitome of the unspectacular. That would have been fine if he was being considered as a place holder in the first team: a stop-gap until someone else came in - but that simply wasn't the case. Signed as one of the final decisions in Sir Bobby Robson's tenure at Newcastle, the £2m man had been a revelation at times for Spurs, but an injury in 2001 kept him out for over a year, and though his form apparently attracted the attention of Man Utd, he simply did not return the same player. He was solid yes, and he did score one memorably thunderous goal, but the attacking flair that had been so obvious in his younger days was suppressed by injuries (and probably the threat of them), and for the last few years of his Newcastle contract he was in and out of the team. He should really have been nowhere near the first team after his first season and a half in all honesty, but the lack of options to cover (the club was forced to turn to Solano eventually) meant he was pretty much protected.
