There would be a solid debate that the club will likely be unable to attract better than they have (also a fairly solid argument to say how can they not) and also a thought that there really isnt much out there in terms of top quality defenders. But with the departures of Vidic, Evra and Ferdinand the Man Utd defence is set to evolve one way or another. Investment may not need to be financial - although the pursuit of Luke Shaw looks set to be a priority - with an investment in coaching and getting the best out of youngsters Rafael, Smalling, Jones, Keane and Varela also a possibility. But the modern game demands investment and there certainly exists a scenario where the club spend big on the defence. The line up will be dictated by the next managers trust in the current players. As it stands the club will be looking for a partner for Jonny Evans and a more reliable right back. Mats Hummels name has been mentioned but there have also been reports he has agreed a deal at Barcelona.
