2. Ronny Rosenthal (vs Aston Villa, 1992)

Ronny Rosenthal's miss vs Liverpool is just as famous now as it was infamous back when the Premier League was first conceived in 1992. This historic howler is widely considered one of the worst ever, and was only outdone nearly two decades later. Rosenthal's miss came in the first month of the Premier League's inauguration in Liverpool's clash with Aston Villa. The Israeli striker latched onto a long ball punted up field by the goalkeeper and out-muscled a Villa defender before cleverly rounding the keeper. The goal was at his beck-and-call and all he need do was roll it into the back of the net. Instead he appeared to lose his footing, his balance, and his head as he swept the ball high up against the crossbar before watching on in anguish as it cannoned off the woodwork and bounced to safety. What makes this miss all the more shocking was that Rosenthal was under no pressure whatsoever at the time. The forward went on to play for Tottenham Hotspur and Watford in the years following this miss but wherever he went, he was always known as the man who missed an open goal.
