10 Worst Ever Premier League Refereeing Mistakes

2. Don Hutchinson's Disallowed Goal, 2000

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-GHqqI6nUA A slightly more historic example now of one of the Premier League's biggest ever refereeing blunders as we travel back to Everton and Liverpool's Merseyside derby of 2000. The score was locked at nil apiece in the clash at Goodison Park, but Everton should surely have won it after referee Graham Poll contentiously denied them a last-minute winner. Liverpool keeper Sander Westerveld took a free-kick in the dying seconds of the game only for his clearance to whack Don Hutchinson as he was walking back toward his half and balloon over his head and into the net. Toffees players celebrated after thinking they had just sealed a famous win over the Reds, only to be left aghast as Poll disallowed the goal, claiming he had already blown for full-time. Video footage showed that Poll in fact HADN'T blown his whistle and the goal should therefore have been allowed to stand. Everton's players were rightly furious as Poll chalked out the goal, denying them an all-too-rare win over their derby rivals, but the beleaguered ref was having none of it as he ignored the protests, sticking to his story that he had already blown his whistle. However, 10 years after the incident, the whistle-blower admitted he got it wrong.
