10 Worst World Cup Teams Ever
5. North Korea (2010)
North Korea were the most surprising entrants in the 2010 World Cup, qualifying for the first time since way back in 1966. Ranked 105th in the world at the time and pitted in a group alongside Brazil, Portugal, and Ivory Coast, North Korea seemed destined to have a dreadful tournament.
Funnily enough, they didn't start too badly. Their first game against Brazil was expected to be a walk in the park for the South Americans, but North Korea kept the game goalless until the second half when the deadlock was finally broken by a wonder goal from Maicon. Elano doubled Brazil's tally in the 72nd minute, but North Korean fans did enjoy the thrill of celebrating a goal of their own in the 89th minute.
Then, Portugal happened. Again, North Korea started the game well enough and the teams went in at half-time with the score at just 1-0 for Portugal. The second half, however, was a goal glut for the Portuguese and an embarrassment for the North Koreans. Portugal scored three goals in a seven-minute period and then added another trio in an eight-minute spell near the end for a final score of 7-0. North Korea then lost 3-0 to Ivory Coast, leaving the tournament with a goal difference of -11 from three games.
