11 Bizarre Transfer Stories Involving Newcastle United

8. Andy Cole Put Off Signing For Newcastle To Do His Laundry

The Claim Having been criticised for his attitude twice by managers at Arsenal and Fulham, Andy Cole had the audacity to tell Kevin Keegan to wait to sign him because he was too busy washing his pants. The Truth Absolutely spot on. Unfortunately for Andrew/Andy or whatever he prefers to be called now, Kevin Keegan pulled a Sir Bobby Robson and called him Adrian on their initial phone call:
"I was playing for Bristol City, in the days before mobile phones, when I came outside to see a note on the window of my car from my team-mate Russell Osman €“ it said: €œColey, give me a call.€ €œKevin Keegan wants to phone you,€ said Russell. I went home and awaited the call. €œHello, Adrian,€ Keegan said. €œI think you have got the wrong person, because I€™m Andrew,€ I replied.
Good start. Possibly because of that, Cole wasn't tripping over himself to travel North to speak to Keegan either. When the Newcastle boss asked him if he could get him up to Tyneside the next day Cole did indeed pull out the seemingly ridiculous excuse:
"I said: €œI can€™t come tomorrow because ?I have to finish my laundry. I can come the day after, though.€ He was a bit taken aback, but I did my laundry and went the day after."
Priorities.
