11 MORE Players Newcastle Have ALREADY Missed Out On This Summer
8. Troy Deeney
The chances of Troy Deeney becoming the plan B if Newcastle failed in a move for Charlie Austin ended when the Watford skipper signed a new five-year deal at Vicarage Road. United had been linked with a £10 million move for the player, who scored 21 times in 42 Championship appearances last season to fire Watford up into the Premier League. Deeney has long been one of the most impressive strikers plying his trade outside of England's top division. He has scored 116 goals in 365 career appearances for Walsall, Halesowen Town and Watford to date although an impressive 66 of those have come in his last three seasons for the Hornets. At 26, Troy would have been on the cusp of being too old thanks to the transfer policies Mike Ashley has implemented at St James' Park. And at £10 million, he would have been an expensive gamble due to the fact he has never played in any notable top flight... Arguably one that United fans won't be too sorry to see the back of.
