When Shearer and Gullit sat next to one another as pundits recently for Match Of The Day, it was clear that there was an almighty elephant in the room. The Dutchman of course famously dropped Shearer for the derby game that spelled the end of his career as Newcastle boss, and though he resigned he claims he was forced out by a witch-hunt even though Freddy Shepherd supported his dropping of Shearer. Shearer meanwhile clearly wasn't impressed with Gullit for the dropping, though he hasn't particularly come out and said much about him. Allaegedly he took the treatment of Rob Lee badly, and didn't agree with the ostracising of Paul Dalglish, who Gullit apparently froze out because he didn't like his dad. Something came to a head and the pair's relationship grew frosty with Gullit publicly admitting Shearer was a waste of money and over-rated:
"It was plain he didn't want to play for me. I told him to his face he was the most overrated player I have ever seen." "He thinks about himself all the time. It's always about his goals and not about the team."
