Newcastle have had two youth team controversies in the recent past: Peter Beardsley and Kenny Wharton were accused of bullying youth players, and subsequently cleared, but not without attracting some unfair attention, and then more recently, Willie Donachie was forced to leave the club after another issue. The reserve team manager sensationally quit the club after he had been suspended on allegations that he had hit prospect Remie Streete after a defeat by Sunderland. Rather than go through the investigation, Donachie instead chose to walk away seemingly suggesting rumours were true. The pair clashed after Streete had given away a penalty during the game, and Donachie is said to have lashed out and connected with the defender.
