11 Spurs Signings Who Were Absolute Bargains

8. Darren Anderton

Darren Anderton cost Spurs just £1.75 million in 1992 when he signed from Portsmouth - and he went on to be one of the club's very best performers for over a decade, throughout the rest of the 1990€s and the early 2000€s.

"Sicknote" - as he became affectionately known at White Hart Lane due to his injury proneness - made 364 appearances for the Lilywhites, scored 51 goals for the club and became a regular England international in that time.

Anderton won the 1999 League Cup with Spurs and was a losing finalist in the same competition three years later against Blackburn Rovers. In his time at Spurs, he regularly attracted interest from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and drew comparisons with United and England legend David Beckham. His crossing ability was fantastic and he set up many, many goals for the likes of Teddy Sheringham.

He left on a free transfer to join Birmingham City in 2004 and, although Spurs got no cash for him, he had repaid the £1.75 million a thousand times over.

He now regularly features for the Spurs Legends exhibition team and was a star performer in Ledley King€™s testimonial match in May of this year - during which he deservedly received a superb reception from the Spurs supporters in attendance.
