11 Things We Learned From Man Utd Vs Newcastle

4. Newcastle May Need To Find A New Formation

Newcastle United will be playing 4-2-3-1 under Steve McClaren. It's the formation that he has fielded in every game since he has taken charge and seemingly nothing (except a Daryl Janmaat red card) will change that. For the second week in a row the midfield two of Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita was found wanting. After being schooled by Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Cork last week, Man Utd's midfield five had the better of them once again. There was far too much room between the lines for the likes of Jaun Mata and Memphis to exploit, and on another day could have cost Newcastle with what could prove to me a crucial point. Jack Colback especially left a lot to be desired. While his partner Vurnon Anita got through a lot of the leg work that has seen him heralded by Magpies fans this season, the Geordie looked to be a long way off the pace and gave the ball away a number of times. He is going to have to pick his performances up considerably if he is to warrant a place in the starting XI. Newcastle should look to play a different formation in the next league game against Arsenal, because if they're struggling against the likes of Swansea and Man Utd's 'engine room', goodness knows what the Gunners' - one of the best in European football - will do to them.
