12 Champions League Winners Who Played For Newcastle
2. Ronny Johnsen
Played For NUFC: 2004 - 2005. Appearances: 5, Goals: 0 Won Champions League: 1999, Manchester United It always comes as a surprise to learn that Johnsen was a major part of Manchester United's treble winning side given his contributions were often overshadowed by the bigger name players at Old Trafford. But he was there, standing tall in central defence, at the Nou Camp when the Red Devils made Champions League history in 1999. But it was the semi-final against Juventus that is often regarded as Johnsen's finest game for the Red Devils, made all the more memorable by the fact he played in the centre of midfield alongside Roy Keane at the Stadio delle Alpi. Of course it was Keane who took the majority of the plaudits, dragging his side to the final with a true captains performance despite being booked and ruled out of the final. Johnsen's contributions, however, were just as decisive as he neutralised Zinedine Zidane and kept Alessandro Del Piero quiet that evening. Unfortunately, by the time he arrived at St James' Park he was pushing 35 and a spent force in the Premier League, playing just five games in black and white before being released.
