12 Newcastle Players Who Returned For A Second Spell On Tyneside

10. Olivier Bernard

First Spell (2000-05): League Appearances: 102 League Goals: 6 Second Spell (2006-07): League Appearances: 0 League Goals: 0 French defender Olivier Bernard arrived on Tyneside from Lyon in 2000 as a complete unknown - yet he managed to establish himself as first-choice left-back in Sir Bobby Robson's Champions League side over the course of the next five seasons. Reasonable in defence, but someone who loved to link up with fellow Frenchman Laurent Robert in attack, Bernard bombed forward from left-back on every possible occasion during his 102 Premier League appearances for Newcastle. After failing to agree a new deal with Newcastle in January 2005, Bernard signed for Southampton before moving to Rangers. Yet by 2006 he was back in the North East - although he failed to make another Premier League appearance for Newcastle due to the fact he suffered from a series of niggling injuries and then a hip problem. His first spell was extremely successful, but unfortunately Bernard's second stint at St James' Park was anything but.
