12 Newcastle Successes (And 12 Failures) Scouted By Graham Carr

3. Daryl Janmaat

Signed: 2014 (from Feyenoord) Transfer Fee: £5 million Position: Right-Back Newcastle United Appearances: 40 (2014-) Newcastle United Goals: 1 Current Club: Newcastle United
A constant threat in attack - providing six assists from full-back - and the Magpies' best defender by a country mile in 2014-15, the 25-year-old looks an upgrade on the departed Mathieu Debuchy, despite costing £10 million less than the Frenchman was sold to Arsenal for. In fact, Janmaat contributed six league assists in 2014-15 - with only Everton's Leighton Baines (nine) and Real Madrid's Marcelo (seven) providing more across Europe. Arguably Newcastle's best player throughout 2014-15, and the club will do well to keep hold of the 23-cap Holland international this summer. Again, however, it must be noted that Janmaat had already featured regularly for Louis van Gaal's Holland side at the 2014 World Cup, so he wasn't a complete unknown - yet Newcastle still did well to act first and sign him from Feyenoord.
