12 Newcastle Successes (And 12 Failures) Scouted By Graham Carr
2. Yohan Cabaye
Signed: 2011 (from Lille) Transfer Fee: £4.5 million Position: Midfielder Newcastle United Appearances: 93 (2011-14) Newcastle United Goals: 18 Current Club: Newcastle United How Newcastle fans would love to see this man back on Tyneside next season - and, if reports are to be believed, the France international is harking for a transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Snapped up for his ridiculously-low buyout clause of £4.5 million by Newcastle in the summer of 2011, Cabaye scored 18 goals in 93 appearances for the Magpies over the next two-and-a-half seasons. PSG then came knocking for the ball-playing and tenacious midfielder in January 2014, parting with £20 million for Cabaye - almost four times the fee Newcastle had paid for him. Newcastle have never filled the hole left in their midfield by Cabaye's departure 18 months ago - and Carr's ability to learn of the 38-cap Frenchman's modest buyout clause proved to be a wonderful piece of information gathering. Yet again though, Cabaye was already a Ligue 1 winner with Lille and a French international when Newcastle signed him, so he wasn't some sort of unknown across the Channel. Still, he was still a cracking signing and Carr deserves serious credit for it. Signing Rating: 9
