14 Things Newcastle Fans Need To Know About Ian Cathro

9. Cathro Describes Himself As A "Crazy Young Lunatic" And His Father Has Labelled Him A "Maverick"

Cathro is certainly not your run-of-the-mill coach. He is very much a man in his own right, with vibrant and fresh ideas. His father, Jack, describes him as a "bit of a maverick" who did not conform to the norm and who used innovative coaching techniques. When talking about himself, Cathro told The Times that people used to view him as a "crazy young lunatic" because he ran "quite intense" training sessions. Every single pass, every single movement, every single decision on the training pitch was analysed and assessed at his coaching school and at Dundee United's academy. There is always a reason for his methods, Cathro maintains - it is about awareness and challenging players to think about their decision-making. One thing's for certain - the Newcastle squad definitely need to analyse their decision-making after last season's debacle.
