Newcastle United: 1997-04 Position: Centre-Back Nationality: Scottish Premier League Appearances: 0 Premier League Goals: 0 International Caps (Goals): 55 (2) Snapped up from Celtic's youth academy by Newcastle in 1997, the Magpies had high hopes for Gary Caldwell - as well as for his brother, Steven. Yet the versatile defender - he could operate at centre-back, right-back, or even as a holding-midfielder - failed to make the grade at St James' Park, being loaned out to Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry City and Derby County. On top of that, he failed to make even a solitary Premier League appearance for the Magpies. Despite this, a successful career in Scotland with both Hibs and Celtic - where he claimed four trophies, including two SPL titles - was followed by a reasonable stint at Wigan Athletic, where he even lifted the FA Cup in 2013. The Stirling-born defender was also a mainstay of the Scotland side for many years, making 55 appearances and scoring twice - even captaining his nation on several occasions. Unfortunately, he couldn't quite cut it at Newcastle United...
