Yet the versatile defender - he could operate at centre-back, right-back, or even as a holding-midfielder - failed to make the grade at St James' Park, being loaned out to Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry City and Derby County. On top of that, he failed to make even a solitary Premier League appearance for the Magpies.
