20 Worst Squads In FIFA World Cup History
17. Switzerland (1966)
Although Switzerland are hardly international football superpowers, it’s still surprising to see them crop up in this list.
As the first entrants from the 20th century, Switzerland’s trip to England in 1966 was hardly a sporting triumph of the ages. Back when the World Cup only included 16 nations (eight of which were European), Switzerland were seen as a fringe team upon qualifying and in their defence, no one was expecting too much from them.
But, this lack of expectation was still shown up when they lost 0-5 to eventual runners-up, West Germany, in their first game before suffering 1-2 and 0-2 losses to Spain and Argentina respectively. Thankfully, this long forgotten horror campaign for Switzerland seemed to be a one off and decades later it feels more like a horrible fever dream for Swiss football fans rather than an actual reality.
