1. Danny Welbeck

Caps: 21 Goals: 8 Welbeck has previously endured his fair share of criticism for his lack of goals but the Man Utd forward has worked hard on improving his tally. He only managed to find the net once in the league last season but already has nine goals to his name this time round. Injuries to van Persie and Rooney at various points during the club campaign have provided Welbeck with an extended run in the first team and his general play has been excellent in some of United's biggest matches this season. Welbeck's pace and energy bring a different dimension to England's attacking play and he is a worrying sight for ageing defenders who are slow on the turn. It remains to be seen whether he does secure a starting berth for Hodgson's team but if he is selected it is likely to be on one side of a front three, providing options for the likes of Gerrard to play balls in behind for him to run on to. However, until Welbeck finds the back of the net on a consistent basis, doubts will remain about his goal scoring prowess. His recent woeful miss when one on one with Bayern's Manuel Neuer served as a reminder that when it comes to the crunch Welbeck may not be the most reliable striker in England's pack.
