5 Premier League Players Who Should Return To Former Clubs

4. Stewart Downing

The England winger was a regular for Liverpool last season but has failed to reach the heights many would have envisaged when he signed for a reported £20 million. Downing played in 36 of Liverpool€™s 38 league games in 2012/13 but appearances may be harder to come by next year. This season Downing may well have to fight with Luis Suarez, Philipe Coutinho, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto, Raheem Sterling, Jordon Ibe, Jordan Henderson and Fabio Borini. Liverpool have been active in the window already this season and you would then expect Liverpool to offload players and Stewart Downing would be high on that list. At 28 and reportedly on £70 thousand a week, Downing does not fit into the criteria of owners FSG. If Downing does leave Anfield then a return to Aston Villa would suit. Aston Villa use the same formation as Liverpool so Downing would fit in easily having already played the role for a year. It would also be a great way for Paul Lambert to introduce some much needed experience into his team. Downing has 34 England caps, is a two-time League Cup winner and has played in Europe. Lambert has got rid of Richard Dunne and is looking to do the same with Darren Bent because they are slow and don€™t fit in with his counter attacking style of play. Stewart Downing would be an experienced player who could play Lambert€™s way effortlessly. The only problem with any potential move could be the Aston Villa fans. Since leaving Villa for Liverpool, his returns to Villa Park have been welcomed with a chorus of boos.
