5 Reasons Arsenal Should Aim For Premier League Glory Rather Than The Champions League
3. They Have Bayern Munich In The Champions League
One very obvious reason why they should concentrate more on a league run than the Champions League is because they have drawn Bayern in the Round of 16. Bayern are the reigning champions of Europe, and are looking to consolidate their claim to be one of the best club sides ever by retaining the title, and if they do they will be the first of the Champions League era to do so since its inception in 1992. The German giants made wholesale changes over the summer, with Pep Guardiola taking over from treble winning coach of last season Jupp Heynckes, and the Catalan coach looks to be continuing their dominance both at home and abroad. The Reds are currently seven points clear of the Bundesliga despite not even being involved at the moment due to commitments in the Club World Cup. Guardiola's side have already beaten Asian side Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0, and are set to meet either South American champions Atletico Mineiro or local side Raja Casablanca in the final of the competition on December 21. Despite their commitments in Morocco, the club are set to return to Europe after Christmas, and February 19 marks the first leg of Arsenal's game against the German side. Bayern won their group with just one loss to Manchester City in their final game, and look every bit as strong as they did last season where they defeated the Gunners at the same stage on away goals.
