Some eyebrows were raised when Everton appointed Roberto Martinez. He won the FA Cup against all the odds with Wigan Athletic but he was also relegated in the same season. Was this the right move? Evidently so. Martinez is a fantastic manager and he suits Everton perfectly. The Spainard is extremely confident in his ability, with it being reported that his first words to chairman Bill Kenwright were "I'll get Everton into the Champions League.". Those comments were laughed off by many but the smiles have been struck from those faces. Everton, behind Manchester City and Arsenal, are one of the best sides in the competition. Yes they also sit behind Chelsea but they can be seen as better. A huge amount of credit must be given to Martinez. He inherited a decent squad from David Moyes but his activity in the transfer window was very good. He got good money for Fellaini, managed to keep Leighton Baines and the additions he made have been great. Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry, James McCarthy and Gerard Deulofeu have been vital to Everton's progress this season. Martinez bought all these men in. In Janaury, he's already added Aiden McGeady. The football he makes him team play is superb. He sticks by his morals and plays the football that everyone likes to see, while also getting results. He impressed with Wigan but with Everton he now has a team that he deserves and one that can compete with the best.
