5 Most Ridiculous Suggestions To Change The Way Football Works

2. Stat Count

In a modern footballing world dominated by statistics and data, the "stat count" rule was always going to crop up when it comes to potentially replacing the penalty shootout. If a game is level after 90 minutes of regulation time and a further 30 minutes of extra time, rather than settling the game from the spot, data is instead pulled in order to determine the victor. In this hypothetical scenario, the winner is determined by who had the most shots on target, who had the most corners, who committed the fewest fouls and which goalkeeper had the fewest touches. It's obscene, obviously, as not only is it a robotic and sterile way of determining the outcome of a football match, but it also snuffs out the notion of the underdog, fighting back against all odds. Liverpool certainly wouldn't have won the Champions League in 2005 had this rule been in effect, and we'd have been robbed of one of the most famous fight-back stories since Rocky first hit cinemas.
