5 Things Manchester United Must Do In The Summer

3. Sign A Central Midfielder

One of the more criticised areas of United's season is their midfield. I read this interesting statistic that altogether in the current Premier League season, United's central midfielders have contributed to a whole two goals and an incredible one assist. In 27 games. 27. It is one of the reasons why they have struggled along with their defence. Strangely, their midfield players have not changed massively in a good few years. Carrick is still there, along with Giggs, Anderson (although he is on-loan) so you do wonder why they are struggling. But these players are either ageing or past their best, so United tend to deploy a certain overrated and underachiever Tom Cleverly in these positions. He is not your out-and-out central midfielder, more of an attacking midfielder but even in his preferred position he is simply not good enough. Granted, Untied did sign Juan Mata to create and score goals, but they turned a blind eye to the deeper midfield position, where they need a strong player who can play alongside Carrick. Although the more advanced positions in midfield are currently taken in the team, they do need a central midfielder who is strong and can dictate the play more. Carrick is solid and reliable, but slow and ageing, rarely contributing to any goals or assists. Two suggestions would be Paul Pogba, a French midfielder whom they actually released back in 2012 and Luka Modric, a Croat who played for Tottenham but now who is at Real Madrid, where there are huge battles for places. Any good quality central midfielder will suit United really, just someone else other than Cleverly.
